Three Reasons to Visit JT Car and Amy Aragon’s SOUNDS LIKE HOME at Galleria Duemila
1. HOME AWAY FROM HOME. It is interesting to see an exhibit that doubles as a reflection of a home with works equally divided among husband and wife and with works that resound the sounds — and memories and meanings! — of home!
Such is SOUNDS LIKE HOME by real-life artist couple, Jay TICAR and Amy ARAGON, whose love affair started as Fine Arts students at the University of the Philippines in Diliman.
What is more is that they might have their roots here in the Philippines, but they they are now based — working, sometimes teaching, and creating art — in Vancouver, Canada.
And they had also set up home in Toronto, Tokyo, and Bandung aside from Vancouver and Manila, further enriching their history of homemaking.
2. PROMOTING SOUND ART. This joint exhibit reverberates — in colorful, painterly fashion — home through abstractions that work on two levels: through dialogue with the non-musical musical aspects of sound art AND through the concept of fragmentation.
Since Amy — or Bebe, as she signed her paintings — is in Canada, JT Car explained that the exhibit took off from Robert Rauschenberg’s white paintings which branched out to the silent pieces of John Cage.
These visionaries provided the visual bridge by which sound art could be taken out of the context both of audio and of music and, thus, fragmented rendered into abstractions.
3. ENJOYING ART WITH ART FORMS. The exhibit might not be that easy to appreciate, especially grounded on these theories, but JT Car — as you would hear in his interview with ArtExpands to be uploaded soon! — made it easier (well, just a bit), with these steps. In my words:
“First, the work should first resonate with the viewer. After all, an art piece is only as good as its viewer. It should make meaning according to one’s experience. Second, the elements of art we learned from school comes into play. Third, we read the critical introduction on the exhibit.
“After all, artworks mean more and give more depending on how invested we are in it and how much we have invested to learn more to appreciate more,” he ended.
The experience is indeed worthwhile with such conversation and the environs of Galleria Duemila standing on a 1,000+ prime property that has been there since the 1920s — even before EDSA was built!
“We had to raise the ground by one meter or so because after EDSA we were right at the bottom!” shared gallery owner Silvana A Diaz who personally attended to guests who were treated — for a change, from Italian to Filipiniana — to pansit, gulaman, and lanzones!
Best to catch the exhibit until 3 November 2018 with the artist around for that priceless conversation!

In their recent exhibit at Galleria Duemila, Jay Ticar and Amy Aragon works on paintings that connect to the visual roots of sound art. The Vancouver- based artist couple articulates their response to this global interest through painterly abstractions and their ongoing theme of home.
Informed by ideas obtained through The 2017 Asia Center Fellowship held in 3 countries, the artists devised a creative structure that proposes a conversation on the non-musical aspect of sound art. They constructed house-like architectural models that are processed through the ideas of fragmentation and painting. This is to relate to abstraction and conceptualism as sound art fundamentals.
Jay Ticar and Amy Aragon has been exhibiting individually and as a tandem in respected venues and events of art here and abroad. After The University of the Philippines, Jay finished MFA at Tama Art University in Tokyo as Monbukagakusho scholar and Amy finished her post graduate program at Seneca College in Toronto. The couple is a combination of individual citations for their artistic practice. This includes being featured in publications, being Ateneo Art Awards finalists, and being recipient of Asian Public Intellectual Fellowship Awards to name a few.
Sounds Like Home will run from October 13 to November 3 at Galleria Duemila, 210 Loring St. 1300 Pasay City.
